Dry eye is a common condition that affects a significant number of people worldwide. It occurs when your tears are unable to provide adequate moisture for your eyes, causing discomfort and visual disturbances. Dry eye is more than just an inconvenience, it’s a condition that can significantly affect your quality of life.
Dry eye can be caused by a variety of factors. Sometimes, it's simply a result of aging. As we get older, our bodies produce fewer tears, which can lead to dry eye. Other times, it's due to an underlying health condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, or thyroid problems.
Exposure to smoke, wind, or dry air can also aggravate the condition. Certain medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, and antidepressants can reduce tear production and lead to dry eye.
The common symptoms of dry eye can range from mild to severe. The most common symptom is a persistent dryness or a scratchy feeling in the eyes. Other symptoms include sensitivity to light, redness, and a sensation of having something in your eyes.
Some people with dry eye also experience a foreign body sensation, the feeling that something is stuck in your eyes. Others may have excessive tearing, a condition known as "reflex tearing". This happens when the dryness irritates your eyes, triggering an overflow of tears. Unfortunately, these tears are mostly water and lack the lubricating qualities provided by regular, healthy tears.
Fortunately, there are several treatment options for the common symptoms of dry eye. Over-the-counter eye drops or "artificial tears" are often the first line of treatment. They can provide temporary relief from dryness and irritation.
For more severe cases, prescription eye drops may be recommended. These can help reduce inflammation and increase tear production. Some individuals may also benefit from punctal plugs, tiny devices inserted into the tear ducts to prevent tears from draining away too quickly.
